to whom it may concern

I arrived home to find a note from Scottish Electric telling me that power would be cut off next Friday to enable tree maintenance.   It began:

Dear Sir(s) or Madam,

Do you suppose they knew it was the piskie church?

  1. It’s really interesting that you could possibly be a plural sir, but only a singular madam . . . . I could go on, but I think I’ll stop there.

  2. If you think this country has bureaucratic problems try Sri Lanka – daughter is occupied in shipping home the little dog which was thrown against her door – eyes barely open – and which she has reared. Today’s post from her is a classic – and perhaps you will none of you mind my giving the link

  3. Elizabeth, I did consider titling the post ‘inclusion or exclusion’. But in the end plural sirs and single madam felt too familiar to quibble about.
